Dear Mayor Demings,

My name is Matt Winick from Ann Arbor, Michigan and I have a strong interest in learning history including social justice. In these subjects, I like to learn the need to make civil rights stronger to reduce discrimination, protect the environment from pollution, have criminal justice reform to help protect people’s rights while reduce crime, and many others. Mayor Demings, the main reason  I’m writing you a letter is to explain how I find your work when you served as Sheriff of Orange County Florida and as current 5th Mayor of Orange County, Florida to be very inspiring to me.

When you served as Sheriff of Orange County, Florida from 2009-2018,  I was very proud on how you are a strong supporter of protecting minorities, women, and people with disabilities from being discriminated. Also on Civil Right, I like on how you are an advocate for people with disabilities’ rights, push to hire women including minorities to work for the Sheriff’s office along with law enforcement agencies to make it diverse, and expand on laws to combat against hate-crime to protect people who are different from being targeted.  Your approach on the criminal justice system like expand treatment programs to help drug-user get the care they need to reduce drug addiction, have educational awareness for youth to learn the dangers of drugs along with the need to reduce gun violence, support funds for forensic science including DNA testing to reduce sending an innocent person to jail, and work with other law enforcement agencies to provide programs to help victims of domestic violence get help on dealing with their trauma are great ways to reform the criminal justice system. During the Hurricane Matthew, I liked on how you expand training programs to help train Sheriffs along with other rescue teams to be prepared to help Floridians get help during the disasters and give tips online on how to keep people safe during the Hurricane. In December 2018, I was amazed on how you made history on becoming the first African American to become Mayor of Orange County, Florida. In your current role as 5th Mayor of Orange County, Florida, I truly appreciate on your continuous support for civil rights by continuing to advocate for people with disabilities’ rights, support funds for women including minorities businesses, and working with other city council members to expand laws to combat against hate-crime to help protect minorities including people who are different.  Expanding job training programs to help train youth including workers to develop work-skills to help prepare for the workforce and expressing the need to raise the minimum wage to help assist minimum wage workers afford to live is common sense to improve the economy. On the environment, I like on how you support funds for renewable energy resources to help reduce addiction to oil with gas, push for funds to improve city services to help clean parks including water resources along with coastal area to make them safe for people to use, and encourage industries including businesses to use energy-efficient products  to help reduce high energy cost while reduce pollution. On education, I liked on how you support funds to improve special education to help students with disabilities get accommodations they need to learn, push for after school programs to provide students with help on their assignments fro tutors, and implement literacy programs to help youth including people improve on their comprehension skills.  Another thing that I like about you provide funds to help repair or restore historical sites including attractions to make leaning a better place while improve tourism and continue to expand on community policing to have law enforcement officers engage with the community to reduce tensions.

Mayor Demings, I have autism with a learning disability. Having a disability is hard for me because I have trouble comprehending on learning different advance subjects, sometimes I struggle to communicate my thoughts, and get teased. Your commitment to support civil rights including people with disabilities’ rights really inspires me to work hard on my disability. Also your role as former Sheriff of Orange County, Florida and current 5th Mayor of Orange County, Florida  gives me motivation to continue to learn history including social justice. My future goal is to someday to work in these areas to help emphasize the need to make civil rights stronger to reduce discrimination, protect the environment from pollution, and many others.

I strongly believe that you are making a great difference in public service. I’m amazed on how you made history on becoming the first African American to become Mayor of Orange County, Florida. Also I like on how you are working hard to support civil rights, protect the environment, and push for criminal justice reform. You have inspired me to work hard on my disability and to continue to learn history including social justice.  Thanks for taking the time to read my letter, working hard to make a great difference, and inspiring me. I wish you the best to continue to make a great difference.
Sincerely,

Matt Winick
